I recently had my android mobile samsung galaxy S2 stolen. I tried to find it, even used plan B but nothing worked.
I now have the HTC one with Android 4.2.2 and I wanted to make sure I had a good chance of finding it if it got stolen.
I looked at various pieces of software out there for this, but the problem is they could all be removed and disabled if you have access to the device.
what you ideally want is the manufacturer to build this into the kernel, which in my case would be HTC.
once you got your phone you would then activate it, and be able to access your phone from a web address from HTC website, on which you would create the user and security details.
once setup it can only be controlled from the web interface, it can never be seen/disabled/removed from the device itself.
sadly no such thing exists at the moment - if I'm wrong please post a response, and I would gladly check it out.
after a lot of trail and error,I eventually setttled on cerberus (paid version) anti theft (https://www.cerberusapp.com/) and prey anti theft from Fork Ltd.
The problem is once you gain access to the device you can go into settings > device admin > disable cerberus and prey and then uninstall it.
so to protect those applications I then installed and bought Applock from Domobile Lab, on which I set a password and locked ( Google play store, install/uninstall, settings ) and lastly I turned on Hide Applock so that you can only see it my going to a specific webpage on your browser (domobile.com/applock)
I think this gives me the best chance of finding my phone once its stolen.
this took me a good weekend to sort out, all the while taking flak from the wife for spending so much time on the phone!
Hope its useful to others, and would be good to hear others experiences of this.
I used this blog as a starting point.
